Douglas Arthur Schilds 1937 - 2013
Douglas Arthur Schilds - lifetime resident of Dawson Creek passed away Sunday August 25 at the age of 76 years.
Doug was born April 13, 1937 at St. Joseph's Hospital in Dawson Creek. He was the third oldest of eleven children born to Anne and Harold Schilds.
Doug enjoyed growing up in a large family. He had lots of stories to tell about his siblings and of their many adventures. He had many fond memories of the American Army coming to town during the building of the Alaska Highway. Lots of special sweet treats were had! Doug played minor hockey in the 40's with his two brothers Ron and Fran. School was not a favourite so Doug went into the work force early in his life. He drove a fuel truck for B A Petroleum and then went to work for Capital Motors, only to be stolen by the Volkswagon dealership Johnston and Prestlien, where he soon became half owner.
In 1959 Doug met and married Reta Northey. They had two children, daughter Heather was born in 1963 and son Clinton was born in 1964.
In 1965 Doug and Reta bought a hobby farm at Tupper. Many memories and many wonderful family parties took place at the farm including a wedding for younger brother Ted and wife Rosinne.
As Doug went into retirement mode his health took a turn and in 2003 Doug was hospitalized. After a few months in the hospital, he moved into Rotary Manor were he has resided for the past 10 years.
Doug will be lovingly remembered by his daughter, Heather (Tim) Roberts, grandchildren, Cody and Kailey Roberts; his son Clinton Schilds, and grandchildren Carston and Spencer Schilds; brothers: Ron Schilds, Fran Schilds, Barrie (Lorraine) Schilds, Bill (Pat) Schilds, and Ted (Rosinne) Schilds; sisters: Norma Leffingwell, Barb Maguire, Betty Ferguson, Patricia (Jim) Inkster, and many nieces and nephews. Doug was predeceased by his mother Anne Schilds, father Harold Schilds, and brother Lawrence Schilds.
As we celebrate Doug's life, we sincerely thank the nursing staff of Rotary Manor for the special care and kindness shown to Doug. For friends so wishing, donations may be made in memory of Doug to:
